An Open Letter to Thomas Volberg (my nephew)!
(The Setting: March 13, 2005, at the home of Thomas and
Diane Volberg, 6:45 p.m., Sunday night.)
(Dear Thomas: I am writing you this letter, and sharing
it with the world via the Internet. It is a moment of great
joy that I experienced because you gave it to me.)
Dear Thomas: As I sit here, in my office, I find myself
surrounded by "things" that have brought me profound
joy and have given me immense pleasure: My certificates of
achievement, my memorabilia of my youth, my coin and art collection.
However, the most intense feeling of "Honor"
that I have ever experienced came on Sunday night, March 13,
2005, 6:45 p.m., when you, my first and oldest nephew, announced
to the whole family who had gathered at your parents' home
-- (Yes, "Family" is a very important concept) -
that you wanted to choose me, Daniel (Uncle Danny) as your
sponsor for your upcoming confirmation.
"Wow!" I was totally shocked, and speechless
- something that rarely, if ever, happens.
Alas, the ever present and omniscient "Rules and
Regulations" prevailed, and your parents explained that
as a follower of the Jewish faith I would not be allowed to
sponsor you.
Shocked as I was, far more gripping of a moment occurred
when you further announced that since I'm not allowed to be
your sponsor, you had decided to choose - I hope I have gotten
this correct - "St. Daniel" as your patron saint
- or your namesake - forgive me, as the moment was so shocking
the explanation has passed through my mind.
How honored I am. You have given me a feeling of belonging
and of being chosen above all the other people, who you love
in your life, for this honor.
In keeping with an ancient tradition, for when one bestows
an honor upon someone, it should be commemorated with a letter
(such as this) and an amulet, one that will cause both of
us to remember March 13, 2005, as the day, "Uncle Danny"
was rendered speechless by my "Nephew Thomas."
The amulet will be forthcoming: A San Francisco Brilliant
Uncirculated U.S. Government Silver Morgan Dollar.
Even "Uncle Peter" would say "Wow!"
At your confirmation day, I'll be standing by your side,
in spirit, at least, and will always remember your warmth
and sincerity.
With affection,
"Uncle" Danny.
